Corpus Christi International Airport Provides Airport Update to City Council

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA) Director of Aviation Kevin Smith presented a yearly airport update, including key performance indicators and construction project updates.

The last fiscal year (FY 2023) was a record-breaking year for CCIA, serving the most passengers in the airport’s history while reducing the cost per enplanement (CPE) by 37%. CPE is a metric used in the airline industry to measure the cost of each passenger boarding a plane at an airport, including landing fees, airside usage charges, fuel flowage fees, and more. A lowered CPE reduces airline costs to the airport, helping to lower ticket prices and potentially influencing an airline to add service.

This fiscal year (FY 2024), airport revenue reached an all-time high by controlling expenditures while increasing revenues.

Other construction through the Terminal Rehabilitation Project, such as new jet bridges, terminal roof and PVC replacement, and window glazing, have been completed. Ongoing rehabilitation includes renovated restrooms, an outdoor patio, and EV charging stations, which will be completed in early 2024. Renovations to all airport restaurants and coffee shops will begin next year.

Progress will continue in 2024 with critical projects such as the airport master plan, which will map out the future of CCIA over the next 25 years. This includes terminal expansion, parking, airfield infrastructure, solar energy, UAS, and more.

History was made this year as Hangar One was demolished after requiring an estimated $8M in repairs due to concrete spalling, foundation failures, and unsafe deterioration of the structure. CCIA expects this demolition will create new opportunities for development in a prime location on CCIA’s airfield.

This past November, “Run the Runway” 5K and 1K returned to CCIA, which had not been held since 2019. Despite the hiatus, 851 runners participated in supporting USO South Texas, who will receive an estimated $6,000 from race proceeds.
